Welcoming a new baby is such a special and fleeting time, and capturing those early days is something you’ll always treasure. As a photographer specializing in Eau Claire newborn photography, I know new parents often have lots of questions before their session—and that’s completely normal! Whether it’s your first baby or your fourth, I’ve put together a list of the most frequently asked questions to help you feel prepared and excited for your newborn photos.
The best time to book your newborn session is during your second or early third trimester. I’ll pencil in your due date, and once your little one arrives, we’ll pick a final date that works best based on their age.
I recommend scheduling your session when your baby is around 14 days old. At this age, babies tend to be very sleepy and snuggly—perfect for those curled-up, cozy poses everyone loves.
Yes, absolutely! While early newborn photos are ideal, I’ve photographed babies up to 6 weeks old. We may skip the tighter, sleepy poses, but we’ll still get beautiful images of your baby—wide-eyed or sleepy. In fact, some of my easiest sessions have been with newborns over 3 weeks old.
Yes! My Eau Claire studio is fully stocked with wraps, headbands, hats, blankets, and props. You don’t need to bring a thing unless you have a sentimental item you’d like to include in the photos.
Yes—please do! I love capturing the whole family during newborn sessions. These early days are just as special for you as they are for baby. I strongly encourage my clients to get in some of the photos with their new baby.
Soft, neutral tones work best—think creams, beiges, light grays, or soft pastels. Avoid bold patterns or logos. The backdrops you have to choose from for family photos are black, gray and tan. Here is another post that gives some more ideas on how to dress.
Newborn sessions typically last 2–3 hours. I take my time so we can feed, cuddle, soothe, and pose as needed. Your baby runs the show, and we follow their lead. Once the newborn is settled the photo taking goes by pretty quickly.
It’s completely normal! I’ve worked with lots of babies, and I always take a calm, patient approach. I have plenty of soothing techniques and never rush a session. My clients often describe me as very patient, and your baby will be in great hands. In the event that your newborn is having an off day and we can’t seem to get them settled, I will suggest coming back another day. I don’t want to stress your newborn too much.
All newborn sessions take place in my photography studio, which is designed specifically for newborns and their families. My studio is set up at my house which is a little south of Eau Claire. It’s equipped with everything we need for a beautiful and stress-free experience.
You can book your session by clicking here! The earlier, the better to guarantee a spot on my calendar. I’d love to connect, hear about your little one, and help you prepare for your newborn session in Eau Claire.
Newborns don’t stay little for long, and I’d be honored to help you freeze this special season in time. If you’re ready to schedule or have more questions, contact me here and let’s chat!
