Does your husband or boyfriend cringe every time you mention booking family photos? You’re not alone! Most men would probably choose just about anything over posing for pictures. From the groaning to the eye rolls, convincing your partner to join in on a family photo session can feel like a battle. So, how do you get your picture-hating man to say yes?
Let’s dive into the reasons men dislike photo sessions and, more importantly, how you can win him over without a fight!
Before we get into solutions, it helps to understand why so many men dread photoshoots. Here are a few common complaints I hear from reluctant dads and husbands:
• It’s Stressful: What if the kids don’t behave? What if you don’t get that picture-perfect shot?
• Uncomfortable Clothes: He might not love the idea of dressing up in stiff, formal clothes.
• It Takes Too Long: The idea of spending hours posing sounds like torture to him.
• Forced Smiles: “I don’t like to smile,” is a phrase I’ve heard more times than I can count.
Sound familiar? The good news is that there are ways to ease his concerns and make the experience a whole lot more enjoyable—for both of you!
Here are some tried-and-true tips to help you convince your man that a family photo session is worth it:
Don’t spring a photoshoot on him last minute. Give him some notice so he can mentally prepare. But, here’s the trick—don’t give him too much time. You don’t want him thinking up excuses for weeks!
Including him in the planning process can make him feel like he has a say. Ask what day and time works best for him, and try to avoid scheduling during a big game or his favorite weekly activity.
Let him wear something he feels good in. You can still coordinate outfits without making him wear stiff, formal clothes. Casual, comfortable clothes often photograph beautifully.
Tell him you’ll work with the photographer to keep the session short and sweet. When we plan ahead and know what shots we want, we can get everything done efficiently.
Everyone loves a reward. You know your man best—maybe it’s a dinner at his favorite restaurant, a guilt-free afternoon to watch football, or, well… maybe a little something more personal (wink, wink)!
As a photographer who has worked with countless families, I understand the challenges. Here’s how I help make the experience as painless as possible:
• Kid-Friendly Techniques: I have lots of tricks to get kids to cooperate. Your husband doesn’t have to stress about wild toddlers!
• Rescheduling Flexibility: If things truly don’t go as planned, I’m happy to reschedule. Your photos should be a joyful experience, not a stressful one.
• Quick & Efficient Sessions: I move quickly, especially when I know Dad is eager to wrap it up.
• Fun & Laughter: Sometimes I even break out my trusty fart blaster. Dads may not love photos, but they almost always laugh at potty humor. It never fails!
So, what do you think? Could these tips work on your picture-hating partner? If he gives the green light, I’d love to capture some beautiful memories for your family. Check out my portfolio of family pictures I’ve taken. Feel free to reach out, and let’s start planning your session!
Just remember—double-check the calendar and make sure you’re not booking during the big game. Trust me on this one!
